Joyce M. King's Obituary
Joyce Marie Hayek King was born April 23, 1931, in Berlin, WI, the daughter of George and Julia (Jensen) Hayek. She lived her early years in Waushara County, WI, and moved to Hartland, WI, in 1936 where she entered kindergarten, and graduated from high school in 1949. She entered Milwaukee State Teachers’ College (now UW-Milwaukee) and transferred to Dana College, Blair, NE, as a junior, and graduated from there in 1953 with a BS degree in Education, and became certified to teach English, Physical Education, and Social Studies. She taught in Schuyler, Omaha, and Blair, all NE, and in Dubuque, Moorhead, all IA, and lastly in Clinton from 1968-1993. She died quietly on November 14, 2022, at Israel Family Hospice House, Ames, IA.
Joyce married William D. King in June 1955 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hartland, WI. They moved to Clinton in 1961 when Bill accepted a letter of call to serve Chancy Lutheran Church. They were parents to Lisa, Jean, and Beth. Joyce was a “family first” kind of mother.
Teaching at Clinton High brought her great pleasure, the faculty, staff, and students; but she enjoyed working with her hands, sewing, knitting, braiding rugs, refinishing furniture, as well as art, music, theater, and literature. Without a doubt, she loved to read and work crossword puzzles, and spend time at their cottage near Saxeville, WI. Her beloved grand-dog Molly brought her joy and comfort for 13 years.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the NEA-ISEA.
She is survived by her daughters: Lisa (Steve) Clarke of Clinton, Jean (Bill) Herrstrom of Madrid, IA, and Beth Coffey of Indianola, IA; five grandchildren: Sara Stiles, Brent (Erin) Stiles, Emily (fiance ́ Eagan Lickiss), Abigail Coffey, and Spencer Herrstrom, all of IA; and three great-grandchildren: Chaz Blair, Luca Blair, and Delaney Stiles, all of IA; sister-in-law JoAnn Hayek; two nephews: Carl (Cathi) Hayek, Neil (Benjie) Hayek and his daughter Stephanie (Nate) Hunn; and a niece Diane Hayek and her daughter Ilyana, all of WI; as well as Jensen cousins in WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill in 2012, her son-in-law Steve Coffey in 2013, and her brother Sidney in 2019.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00pm, Sunday, December 4, 2022, at Zion Lutheran Church – Clinton, with visitation from 1:00pm to the service time.
