John "Dick" Richard Schafer's Obituary
John Richard "Dick" Schafer, 95, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away August 10, 2013 at the Alverno, Clinton. Services will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 12:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, Clinton. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the service hour at the church. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Bill Allen, Curt Allen, Joel Petersen, Mark Mooney, Todd Posey and Jason Barnett. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
John “Dick” was born April 19, 1918 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, the son of Walter and Retta (Caviness) Schafer. John was a 1935 Fairfield High School graduate. He married Martha Ann Clark on June 11, 1941 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa, Iowa.
John was a WWII, United States Army veteran. He was a squad leader with the 3345th Signal service company, 24th Corps, 10th Army Division. He served in the Pacific Theatre in the Okinawa Campaign from May to November, 1945.
He was employed as a supervisor with DuPont for 39 years. He had also worked for DuPont in Argentina for three and a half years and in Canada and Mexico consulting.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis and was a 32nd degree Mason. John was an avid Hawkeye fan, enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, Stamp collecting, golfing at Valley Oaks and the Fulton Country Club and was a Cub Scout Pack 10 Pack Master.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Schafer of Clinton, IA; sons, John (Lynnea) Schafer of Belpre, OH, David (Jean) Schafer of Pacific, MO and Fred (Sally) Schafer of Norman, OK; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Mercy Hospice.
