Dale and I had many things in common. We were the smallest kids in the class (along with Ronnie). We were in the same confirmation class. We were farm kids. We wrestled each other most every practice at NE.
We shared a common problem at school. Learning did not come easy for us. The frustration of "not getting it" was great. But when it was recess time everything was OK. We would play hard, even fight...but when recess was over (the fight was over too) we went back to work and tried to learn it again, together.
I think this relationship with Dale helped me have a soft spot in my heart for the struggling learners. I have bad memories of old hard nosed teachers at NE who would belittle those like myself who didn't "get it" the first time. I had about 35 years of successful teaching, about 25 years at Central DeWitt.
Seeing Dale at our next class reunion was something that I was looking forward to, but this is not going to happen now.
We shared much together and learned from each other's tough experiences. Thank you, Dale, for being my friend. I will miss you. Please keep a seat on the bus for me, too.
