Clifford Barber's Obituary
Clifford F. Barber, 85, of DeWitt, Iowa, died, Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Clarrisa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. Memorial Services will be 11:00am, Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ – DeWitt with Pastor Jeff Wartgow officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00am to the service time at the church. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Clifford Freelan Barber was born on February 16, 1924 in DeWitt, Iowa, the son of Freelan and Elsie (Maynard) Barber. He married Evelyn Fischer on January 23, 1944 in DeWitt. Clifford was a 1941 graduate of DeWitt High School. Clifford was a underwriter and agency supervisor with Iowa Mutual Insurance Company for 40 years. He was also Vice President and a former member of the board of directors from 1976-2003. Clifford was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeWitt, a over 50 years member and past master of the Crossroads Masonic Lodge in DeWitt, a member of Clinton Scottish Rite Bodies, KAABA Shrine, and served on the DeWitt City Council. He also played baseball with the DeWitt Independent Team in the late 40’s and 50’s and coached Pony League baseball in the 1950’s. Clifford is survived by his wife: Evelyn of DeWitt; two sons: Gary Barber of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Alan Barber of Sterling Heights, Michigan; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers: Ivan Barber of DeWitt, Iowa, and Ellis (Myrtle) Barber of DeWitt, Iowa, and a sister: Virginia Soutar of Prescott Valley, Arizona and several nieces and nephews. Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister. Memorials can be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeWitt, the Shriner’s Hospital, or the Clarrisa C. Cook Hospice House.
