Byron Starr's Obituary
Byron E. Starr, 94, of Clinton, died Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, North Campus, Clinton. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the First Congregational Church, Clinton. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS Post#28. Serving as pallbearers will be Jack Harden, Dwight Royer, Charlie McDonnell, Jim Stachour, Don Krambeck, and Al Lorenz. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his 10:00am coffee group. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory with a Rose Croix service at 7:00 PM. Byron Elias Starr was born on March 11, 1915 in Trumbull, Nebraska, the son of Elias F. and Rosa (Lesher) Starr. He married Dorothy G. Thomas on September 19, 1942 in Audubon, Iowa, she died January 22, 2004. Byron graduated from Grand Island, Nebraska High School. He was a graduate of Hastings College and was working on a PhD. at Iowa State University before serving in the United States Navy during World War II. In 1946 Byron and Dorothy moved to Clinton and Byron began employment at Clinton Corn. He was the corn buyer until his retirement in 1982. Byron also owned a farm near Charlotte. Byron was a member of the First Congregational Church, a 50 year member of Lyons Masonic Lodge #93 AF & AM and Clinton Scottish Rite Bodies, KAABA Shrine, and was a member and President in 2001 of the Clinton Hi-12 Club. He was a member Clinton Rotary Club. He served on the Clinton City Council in the 1960’s and 70’s. In 2005 he was crowned King of Clinton for his civic efforts during the flood of 1965 and the construction of the flood levy along the Clinton riverfront. Byron enjoyed playing bridge and teaching bridge. Byron is survived by a son: Richard (Joanne Alt) Starr of Eagan, Minnesota, a daughter: Sarah (Fred Sisser) Starr of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren: Gregory Starr and Gail Starr, and one brother: Robert Starr of Norfolk, Nebraska. Byron was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son James; brother Donald, and sister Helen. Memorials can be made to the First Congregational Church.
