Willis was born December 22, 1941, in Straight Creek, KY, the son of John Willis “Bill” and Mossie (Holt) Carroll. He was a United States Airforce veteran, serving from 1959 to 1961. He married the love of his life, Selena Miller on February 28, 1973, in Rock Island, Illinois. He was a member of Laborers Local 43 for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Clinton, IA.
Willis was known for his friendly smile, sarcasm, and his quick wit. He enjoyed playing cards, collecting coins, and was always up for a drink. He had a passion for gardening and loved being able to give away the fruits of his labor to his friends. His family and friends knew him fondly for his practical jokes; Willis would never take something from a women’s purse, but he would add to it (salt & pepper shakers, coasters, whatever he could find).
If you knew Willis you were his friend, Willis never knew a stranger. He was always there when you needed him. Willis was immensely proud of his family, and he loved spending time with his five grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Selena Carroll of Morrison, IL; daughters, Melissa (Shawn Appleman) Carroll of Morrison, IL, and Mona (Derrick) Nickels of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Alexis, Samantha, Mena, Wilson, and Eli; brother, Ernie (Vicki) Carroll of Morrison, IL and sister, Betty Hathaway of Savanna, IL.
Willis was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Jim Wiersema, a sister, Billie and a brother, Jack.
Memorials may be made to the family.
