I had the great joy of knowing Vern for more than 50 years. When something broke or repair was needed we all relied on Vern for his knowledge. Often Vern would arrive with the proper tools and parts to complete the repair and expect nothing in return. Vern would see a pile of abandon wood and saw a piece of furniture, a wall that could be built, or a gift he could make. Vern not known for throwing anything away was very organized in storing his treasures. Recently in need of a part Vern instructed me where to find the part in his out building and knew just which container it was in and its location.
I can’t recall a foul word coming from Vern’s mouth or ever seeing Vern angry. When young people met Vern they fell in love with him and listen attentively as Vern would share success to marriage or raising children. We all loved his stories from growing up during the depression, serving in World War II, and fixing farm equipment in the field for many farmers. During a recent ride with Vern and our wives on the back roads of Clinton and Jackson county, Vern would point to farm house and recall who lived there and a piece of farm equipment he had repaired for the farmer. This replayed many times during our trip. Once we stopped for lunch someone recognized Vern and stopped to say hello and shared a favorite story of Vern’s.
I am blessed to call this man my brother-in-law, my brother in uniform, most important my brother in Christ Jesus. What a blessing to know I will one day be with Vern again in heaven. I pray for God’s continued blessings for Vern’s family and thank you for sharing this wonderful man.
