Stewart M Smith's Obituary
Stewart (Stu) M Smith, 91, of Fulton, IL passed away on August 1, 2015 at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, IA, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Arrangements are pending at Snell-Zornig Funeral Home in Clinton, IA. Cremation rites will be accorded. According to his wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.
Stewart was born April 27, 1924, one of seven children born to Francis and Florence Smith. Growing up in Camanche and Clinton, he attended Camanche schools. Eager to serve his country, he joined the Marines. He was a proud WWII decorated veteran having served in the south Pacific.
He was united in marriage to Dellamae Jean Foster on August 31, 1947. She survives. Also surviving are three children, Lawana (Larry) Norem and Kathy (Mike) Housenga of Fulton, IL and Terry (Kirsten) Smith of Bloomington, IL, 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, all six siblings and great-grandson Evan Edmondson.
Stewart was a truly multi-faceted person. He was employed for 20 plus years with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, holding several positions, lastly as welding supervisor/instructor. Upon retirement from the railroad, he became a Millwright. In addition to his military and employment careers, Stewart was a 32nd degree Mason, twice past Master Mason and member of the 2158 Union. In his early years he enjoyed repairing and rebuilding outboard engines, as well as speed boat racing. He was an accomplished singer/songwriter/musician, author/poet, artist/painter and licensed pilot. In addition to flying airplanes he often enjoyed parachuting out of them. He played several musical instruments and loved entertaining people at venues in Clinton and the surrounding area. He had many unusual experiences and stories to share. With all of his talents and accomplishments, he was most proud of his family and he shared with them his high morals and family values.
