Shirley Lee West was born June 25, 1937 in Staunton, Virginia, the daughter of William Sr. and Hazel (Hanger) West. She was a 1955 graduate of Clinton High School and she married Lonnie “Pete” Walters on January 6, 1956 in Camanche, Iowa. She worked at Neckers Jewelers in DeWitt for 14 years. She owned and operated Shirl’s Ceramic Studio for 15 years and carried mail to the people of Camanche for nearly 5 years.
Shirley became an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan over the years of being married to Pete. She kept the Cardinal's schedule next to the TV remote. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Camanche for many years. She was a talented artist and enjoyed painting, pencil coloring, and crocheting. Shirley was an accomplished cook and baker, decorating cakes and selling them for many years. More than anything, she enjoyed time spent with her husband and their family, especially after she and Pete moved to Des Moines.
She is survived by her husband Lonnie “Pete” Walters; three children: Michael (Lorie) Walters of Franklin, Texas, Chris Walters of Des Moines, Iowa and Laura (Andrew) Leonard of Mingo, Iowa; four granddaughters, two grandsons, nine great grandchildren, and one nephew Jason West of Alpine, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin great granddaughters, and her brother William West Jr.
Friends and family are welcome to stop by the Camanche Community Center on Monday, July 14, from 3 to 8 PM to celebrate Shirley's life and her family.
