Sara Ann (Sally) Holman Hill's Obituary
Sara Ann (Sally) Holman Hill, 84, of Clinton, IA died peacefully, Friday, August 7, 2015 at Mercy Living Center – North, surrounded by her loving daughter and dear friends.
Visitation will be Friday, 14 August from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory. On-line condolences may be expressed by visiting her obituary at www.snellzornig.com.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Dick Holman, Lou Kaufman, Dan Franks, and Mike Krogman.
Sara Ann (Sally) Holman was born to Howard W. and Mary (Gilchrist) Holman on October 25, 1930 in Waverly, Iowa. She became a resident of Center Point, Iowa at the age of one, attended school there, graduating in 1948. Sally furthered her education at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, where she graduated in 1952 with a B.A. in Education. She came to Clinton to teach first grade at Hawthorne School. While teaching at Hawthorne, Sally met and married Edward J. Hill, the uncle of two of her students, Gary and David Hill. Sally later taught first and/or second grade for Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Longfellow elementary schools, retiring in 1992. She was a life member of the NEA, ISEA, and the CEA.
After retirement, Sally got involved in many activities. She served as a tutor for Study Connection at its inception, did historical research for the city of Clinton, served on the boards of the Christian Women’s Club and the Soaring Eagle Nature Center. She was a volunteer at the YWCA, a booster and membership coordinator for the Prairie Pastures Dog Park at Eagle Point Park, served on committees at the First United Methodist Church, was a member of the Halleluiah Bell Choir, and sang with the “Clintones”. She enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, needlework, and was a member of the sewing and serger clubs.
Sally was an avid sports fan following “her teams”: The University of Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Bulls, and Clinton’s own Royal River Kings and Queens. Sally had reserve football and basketball tickets for over 50 years with her friend, Carol Cook Kaufman.
Sally and Ed shared 52 years of marriage. Ed preceded her in death in 2007. Sally’s father, Howard Holman, died in 1986, and her mother, Mary Gilchrist Holman, died just before her 106th birthday in 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Sara Hill Cole, and her wonderful granddaughter, Marion Catherine Holman Cole, and, of course, her Shih Tzu, Honey.
Sally is also survived by her brother, Howard Richard (Dick) Holman of Perryville, KY., the much loved families of her nieces and nephews: Kimberly Holman Swanson (Dan Franks) of Clearwater, FL, Kurt Holman (Dawn) also of Perryville, KY, Joyce Hill Fishman (Morrie) in Kansas City, MO, Gary Hill (Joy) of Warrenton, VA, David Hill (Linda) of Phoenix, AZ, Jim Hill (Kathy) of Jasper, MO, Sharon Milnes Woodard (Mitch) from Milledgeville, IL, and her very close friends Jetta McGarry (Anaheim, CA), Pat Rand (Alexandria, VA), Lou and Carol Cook Kaufman, Linda Smith, and great neighbors, Mike and Mary Krogman.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Prairie Pastures Dog Park in Clinton, or the First United Methodist Church of Clinton.
