Samuel J. McKenrick's Obituary
Samuel J. McKenrick, 95, lifelong resident of Camanche, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Alverno – Clinton.
Services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at St. Mark’s Methodist Church – Camanche. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory with a 7:30 pm Rose Croix service.
Samuel Johnathan McKenrick was born February 11, 1922, in Camanche, Iowa, the son of Harry G. and Emily (Gordon) McKenrick. He was a 1939 graduate of Clinton High School and served in the United States Marine Corp from 1942 to 1945. He married his childhood sweetheart, Evelyn Tyler, at Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago, Illinois on October 20, 1945; she preceded him in death on January 31, 2015.
Sam worked as a Maintenance Mechanic at Alcoa for 33 years retiring in 1983. He was a lifelong member of St. Marks Methodist Church in Camanche, Camanche Masonic Lodge #60 and the Clinton Scottish Rite Bodies. He held an honorary 33rd Masonic Degree and served two terms in the Grand Lodge of Iowa. He was a member of Camanche VFW.
Sam was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and held season tickets for many years. He was a contributor to Carver Hawkeye Arena. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed yardwork, gardening, golf, Cardinal baseball and Packer football.
Sam is survived by his three children: Thomas (Brenda) McKenrick of Cameron, North Carolina; Jane McKenrick of Tiffin, Iowa and Linda (Ken Zarling) Menke of Shoreview, Minnesota; grandchildren: Nancy VanDyk, Brian (Alanna) Menke, Melissa Belling and Kevin Herrity; great-grandchildren: Vladimir VanDyk, Skylar Menke, Gracie Menke, Vincent VanDyk, Kaden Menke, and Zoe Belling; one sister: Yvonne Simpson of Batavia, Illinois and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife of nearly 70 years, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Amy Dierks.
Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial in Sam’s name.
