Sally McGauvran's Obituary
Sally Ann McGauvran, 72, died early Tuesday morning, surrounded by family, at Mercy Medical Center?North in Clinton, Iowa , after a four-year battle with congestive heart failure and other conditions.
Sally was born October 3, 1935, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Charlotte (Moss) and Spencer Green. She was valedictorian of her class upon graduation from Pickstown High School in Pickstown, South Dakota. Sally was a cousin of Dick Green of Oakland Athletics and World Series fame. She attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL, where she met Ronald James McGauvran. They were married at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Clinton, Iowa, on June 11, 1955. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a voyage on the Queen Mary II to London.
She and Ron lived in Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Clinton in 1958 to work for a business owned by Ron?s mother and founded by Ron's father in 1944. Sally shared an active ownership of Dormac Oil Company (d/b/a Service Oil Company) with her husband and served the business as Secretary-Treasurer.
A forty-plus year member of the Clinton Country Club, Sally loved to play golf, achieving two "holes-in-one" in her illustrious "career." She was an avid reader, gourmet cook, a true Hawkeye fan, and keen follower of foreign affairs and politics. She was a previous board member of the Pearson Family Trust and enjoyed playing bridge with her Friday Bridge Club. She was a member of the HV chapter of PEO. Most importantly, Sally was a beloved wife and mother who treasured her family. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind three daughters and one son: Stacy McGauvran-Hruby (Bruce), Coralville, Iowa; Elizabeth (Liz) McGauvran, Clinton, Iowa; Johnna ( Don) Forbes, Lone Tree, Iowa; and John (Kathy) McGauvran, Omaha, Neb.; six grandsons?Dustin, Alex and Peter Hruby, and William, Adam and Ryan McGauvran; and one granddaughter, Hailey Forbes. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and sister, Barbara.
Respecting Sally's wishes, a private burial service is planned at Fulton Township Cemetery. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be directed to Camp Courageous of Iowa, Monticello, Iowa.
