Russell Hamre's Obituary
Russell L. Hamre, 87, of Clinton, died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30am, Monday, July 16, 2012 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church – Clinton. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS Post #28. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory. Russell Leroy Hamre was born on June 28, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Leland and Emily (Anderson) Hamre. He married Joan Newman on September 5, 1950 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; she died on January 25, 1998. Russell was a 1943 graduate of Columbia Heights High School. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II from 1943-1946 in the 102nd Infantry Division the “Fighting Ozarks”. After being honorably discharged he graduated from the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis in 1948. Russell was a plant operator at Interstate Power Company for 38 ½ years; retiring in 1990. Russell was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the former Lutheran Church of the Atonement, the VFW, Y’s Men, Clinton Amateur Radio Club, Sippi Sam’s Good Sam Club, and the Riverboat Rustler’s Square Dance Club. He enjoyed motorcycling, boating, camping, traveling, and barbershop singing. He spent many winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Russell is survived by his son: James Hamre of Arlington, Virginia; his daughter: Jane (Dean) Inskeep of Waukee, Iowa; five grandchildren: Kayla Inskeep, Jared Inskeep, Katie Joanna Hamre, Emily Davis Hamre, and Norman Russell “Ridge” Hamre. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister Leila Schultz. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Hospice, or the Alzheimer’s Association- Greater Iowa Chapter.
