Robert Hews Lassen, 55, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed on October 05, 2021. Robert was born on January 09, 1966, in Clinton, Iowa to Annette Arnold (nee. McCann) and Uwe Lassen.
Robert was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend to many, all of whom will remember him for his generosity, kindness, and compassion. He loved animals of all kinds, but had a special appreciation for felines, evident by the many cats he had rescued and cared for over the years. He leaves behind a family and friends that love him very much. Robert is survived by his parents; his brother, Chris Lassen; sister, Heidi Chapman (nee. Lassen); sister, Amber Dunahoo-Orleanski; nieces - Samantha Chapman, Danika Chance (nee. Lassen), Gabrielle Lassen, and Alexis Orleanski; nephews - Devin Lassen, Derick Chapman, and Draven Orleanski; and many cousins including – Lori Collins, Peter Lassen, Tyson Lassen, Andrew Lassen, Tyler Lassen, Corey Lassen, Cody Lassen, and Demian Gordon. He was proceeded in death by his grandparents, Albert Hews McCann Jr, Cecile McCann (nee. Nelkin), Lieselotte Lassen (nee. Nissen), and Adolf Hans Lassen; Uncle, Peter Jens Lassen; Stepmother, Diana Lassen (nee. Smith); and sister, Anita Lassen.
An Eagle Scout, Robert completed two degrees at Iowa State University, one in Electrical Engineering and the other in Computer Engineering. He was extremely technical and known for his critical thinking abilities. Robert was frequently sought after for computer related advice both professionally and in his personal life.
Robert worked for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana as electrical engineer for more than 25 years in the Airborne Electronic Attack division, where he was well respected for his vast computational and networking skills. His willingness to learn and grow, as an engineer and a colleague, was admired. Robert had a thirst for knowledge that could only be quenched by the written word. His personal library contains both a vast breadth and depth of subjects ranging from medieval war chronicles to the teachings of Buddha.
Robert adored traveling. He prided himself on collecting both memories and coins from all over the world. His adventures took him from Germany to Austria, from Hawaii to the Netherlands, from Slovakia to Hungary, from the bridges of London to camps in Krakow. All of which fed his hunger for world history.
Robert was an avid gamer, he loved games of strategy from tabletop, to board, and computer. He both attended and hosted weekly game sessions with various groups of friends for decades. He will be remembered fondly for his skill, love of intricate tactics and dynamic personalities within the gaming community.
Above all else, Robert loved family. He treasured the time he spent with all members of his immediate and extended family. He was always a great comfort to those who needed him.
Robert will be affectionately remembered by family and close friends for his generous culinary creations, eclectic tastes in movies and music, endless hours of storytelling, his humor, his candor, his gentle nature, and his willingness to help his fellow human beings.
Memorial Services will be 1:00pm, Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
