Robert B. "Sonny" Howard, 73, of Clinton, IA, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center - North Campus in Clinton, IA. Services will be held at Prince of Peace Parish Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be at Schmitz Funeral Home on Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, in Clinton, IA. Pallbearers will be Mike Schaley, Terry Kracht, Grant Wilke, Bill Witt, Pat McCutcheon, Russell Luckritz, Bill Wright and Ben Howard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ron Izer, Wayne Lind and Greg Cook. Sonny was born on March 5, 1935, in Clinton, IA, the son of Robert P. and Berniece C. (Rohde) Howard. He married Phyllis Schaley November 15,1962 in Clinton, Iowa. He was a 1953 St. Mary's High School graduate. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the USS Iowa. Sonny had been a Clinton Firefighter for 23 years before retiring. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, the AMVETS and the Eagles Club. He was a Cubs and Hawkeye fan, was an avid bowler and loved to cook and fish. Survivors include his sons, Mark Howard and Kevin Berry both of Clinton; daughter, Gail Barrette of Low Moor, IA and Vickie (Bill) Wright of Dixon, IL; his special friend-Mary Ann Hallinan of Clinton, IA; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his sister, Connie (Tom) Howard of Madison WI; and his brother Tim (Roxanne) Howard of Clinton, IA. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents.
