Richard L. Carstensen, 90, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in Clinton. Private graveside services will be held Friday, June 28, 2024, at Springdale Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting snellzornig.com. Richard Lynn Carstensen was born on January 23, 1934, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Detlef and Olivia (Nelson) Carstensen.
A 1952 graduate of Clinton High School, Richard pursued higher education at the University of Iowa before serving his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany.
His professional journey took him across the country, working for what is now McKesson Corporation, in the cities of San Francisco, New York, and Chicago.
Richard's career also saw him joining Carstensen Freight Lines, a company founded by his father Detlef in 1936. After his father's passing in 1945, his mother Olivia managed and grew the family company as President and Treasurer with remarkable leadership. Richard served as Secretary for the company for 34 years, playing a crucial role in its operations until his retirement.
A passionate world traveler in his younger years, Richard had a particular fondness for Greece, a destination he visited frequently.
His never-ending love for theater, movies, art, and opera was infectious, and he delighted in recounting stories of renowned conductors and performers he had seen in-person to his nieces and nephews.
Richard was a dedicated genealogist, meticulously tracing his family's history and generously assisting others in discovering their ancestral roots. He was also a long-time volunteer for the Clinton Historical Society and local cemeteries. His extensive research was a treasured gift to family, friends, and even strangers.
A lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and a devoted supporter of Iowa Hawkeye sports teams, Richard's love for his teams was unwavering.
Richard is survived by his brother, James A. Carstensen of Clinton and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Special appreciation is expressed by Richard’s family to his niece Lisa Carstensen O’Rourke who went above and beyond to ensure his care and comfort during his final years of life.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Detlef Carstensen and Olivia Carstensen Holle; brothers, Jack Carstensen and David Carstensen and his sister Judy Gorman.
Richard’s life was a tapestry of rich experiences, intellectual pursuits, and a deep appreciation for the arts. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
