Pearl Hawkins' Obituary
Pearl E. Hawkins, 89, of Camanche died Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Dr. Donald Batz officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from noon until the service hour at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery in Thomson, IL. Pallbearers will be Robert Yahn, Bill Cooper, James Acton, Christopher Hawkins, Michael Cooper and Andrew McFarland. Pear Erna Karnatz was born on June 25, 1920 in Hinsdale, IL, the daughter of Louis D. and Anna Christina (Giermann) Karnatz. She was a 1938 graduate of Hinsdale High School. She attended Illinois State University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in education in 1942. While enrolled there, she was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon honorary geography fraternity and Kappa Delta Epsilon honorary education fraternity. She married Malcolm F. Hawkins on April 23, 1942 in Hinsdale, IL; he died on September 23, 1994. She taught at San Luis Rey Town School in Colorado Springs, CO, and later in Houston, MO and Camanche, IA. She helped start and taught at Piccadilly Pre School in Camanche. She was a Sunday school teacher in Houston, MO, Manchester, IA, and Camanche. She was a Girl Scout Leader in Houston, MO and Camanche. She had been previously employed with Bacon Whipple Investment Company in Chicago, IL. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Camanche since 1965. She was a former member of the ladies auxiliary to the VFW in Camanche, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Houston, MO, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Houston, MO, Camanche Reading Circle, Camanche Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Camanche Senior Citizens (meal site), and the Clinton YMCA since July 1985. She is survived by her 4 children: Karen (Jim) Acton of Denver, IA, Mary Lou (Bob) Yahn of Mesa, AZ, Lee Hawkins of Fulton, IL, and Ruth (Bill) Cooper of Chesterfield, MO; 10 grandchildren: Juli Acton, Connie McFarland, Jo-Dee Casteel, Tanya Gardner, Terri Hawkins, Christopher Hawkins, Sarah Wiles, Kyle Duncan, Jenny Cooper, and Michael Cooper; 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter in law Kristine Hawkins, and one great grandson. Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
