Nanette LaVerle Pieper was born June 6, 1932, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Curtis R. Pieper and Olga Severine (Bjornas) Pieper. She grew up in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School in 1950. Nan was a member of the choir and a violinist in the orchestra during her school years. She was also a member of the swim team. She moved to Camanche upon her marriage to Richard Powell.
Rich and Nan met on the 4th of July 1951. In September, Rich was sent to Army basic training. He returned home on leave just before the holidays, proposed to Nan on Christmas Eve morning, and they were married on January 21,1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clinton. He shipped to Korea soon after with no promise of return.
Upon Rich’s safe return 15 months later in May 1953, they began their family. Their five children, one son and four daughters, were the pride of Nan’s life. Rich and Nan celebrated 63 years of marriage before his passing in October 2015.
Nan spent the majority of her life as a homemaker. After high school she worked at Clinton Auto Parts and Clinton Corn Processing. After raising her kids, she worked at Camanche Public Library and achieved her real estate license to assist Rich in selling homes. She also served on the Camanche Parks and Rec board. Nan was an excellent seamstress and meticulously sewed for her family, teaching her daughters along the way. She loved to bake, cook, and watch her Cubs and thoroughly enjoyed listening to Christian music and singing along. In retirement, Rich and Nan learned to country line dance. In her later years, she began crocheting afghans. She never tired of crocheting and because of that many will be comforted by them in her absence.
Nan lived her life to care for Rich and her family. She is survived and will be dearly missed by her five children: Mike (Chris) Powell of Papillion, Nebraska, Lora (Larry) Baltes of Lisbon, Iowa, Carol (Frank) Taucher of Clinton, Meg (Pete) Hinrichsen of Camanche, and Monica (Eric) Pugh of Winterset, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 3 step-great grandchildren; her sister-in-law Natalie Swanson of Elgin, Illinois; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Curtis G. and Margaret Powell of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; and her sister-in-law Jean Pieper of Overland Park, Kansas.
Nan was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and both of her brothers Dean and David Pieper.
Memorials may be made to the Eagle Point Nursing & Care Center.
