Nancy was born January 29th, 1961 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of William D. and Ardean E. (Pokorny) Carlson. She was educated in the Clinton Community School District and received her teaching degree from Marycrest College in Davenport, IA. Nancy married Dennis Witt in Clinton, Iowa on July 7th, 2001 and they enjoyed 20 years of love, romance, and adventure. He passed away February 21st, 2022.
An amazing mother, grandma, wife, sister, educator, and friend barely begin to describe Nancy as a person. Being a godly mom and grandma and watching her children and grandchildren grow, learn, and have fun was something she highly valued. She was hardworking and always up for a project, with what seemed like a boundless amount of energy. Play was as important as work and she loved a fun adventure.
Nancy taught her first year at Lyons Middle School and went on to teach 21 years at Washington Middle School. She loved teaching 7th grade science. Her passion was contagious and many former students have expressed pursuing science based careers because of their time in her classroom. Many lives were influenced in a positive way through her Teen Club that ran for many years. It focused on doing service projects in the community and having fun playing dodgeball. She was intentional about modeling good behavior, doing the right thing, and teaching life lessons during work and fun.
After leaving education, her love for helping others led her to working at the Crisis Pregnancy Center and volunteering at the Victory Center in Clinton. This desire to help others eventually led her to run and be elected to the Clinton City Council in 2022 where she served for six months.
Nancy’s number one goal in life was to point people towards the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus. She wanted everyone to experience the freedom that can only be found in Christ. Her faith and love for the Lord were evident to all. We are confident and take comfort in knowing that Nancy was greeted by her loving Savior with open arms with him saying, “Well done good and faithful servant”.
Nancy is survived by her children, Tiffany Witt of Long Grove, IA; Rachael (Brian) Bartachek of Deep River, IA; Kenny Mitchell of DeForest, WI and Courtney Holcomb of Clinton, IA; grandchildren, Jordan, Quinn, Serena, Alex, Jaylynn and Merritt; and siblings, John E. (Elizabeth) Carlson of Orion, IL; Daniel D. (Beth) Carlson of Clinton, IA; Barbara (Howard) Hartman of Ridgfield, WA and Susan (Robert) Erickson of McFarland, WI.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. She will be greatly missed by the many people who’s lives she touched in a special way.
