Marie Smith's Obituary
Marie W. Smith, 88, of Clinton, died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the First United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Scott Nesbitt officiating. Burial will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery – Morrison, Illinois. Serving as pallbearers will be Jon DeBruin, Doug Nelson, Robert Lassen, Devin Lassen, and Lark Leazer. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00pm, Wednesday at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory. Marie Wilma Wiersema was born on July 1, 1923 in Lyndon, Illinois, the daughter of William and Grace (Stuart) Wiersema. She married Robert R. Smith on September 27, 1946 in Morrison, Illinois, he died September 28, 2002. Marie was a 1942 graduate of Prophetstown High School and attended and graduated from Moline Public Hospital’s nurses training in 1945. She worked at Moline Public before moving to Clinton in 1947. She was a nurse at Jane Lamb Hospital from 1953-1961. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church where she was actibe with the Mariners for many years. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter KY, the Order of Eastern Star #65, and volunteered with blood drives with the Red Cross. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, bird watching, entertaining family and friends, and traveling with her husband especially the winters in La Quinta, California. She is survived by her daughter: Diana (Uwe) Lassen of Clinton; three step-grandchildren; her sister: Florence Ruhnow of Silvis, Illinois; three brother-in-laws: Wayne Farrell of Morrison, Illinois, Paul (Ruth) Smith of Urbana, Illinois, and Phil (Peggy) Smith of Gilbert, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, one sister, and one step-granddaughter. Memorials can be made to the First United Presbyterian Church.
