Margaret M. Nielsen's Obituary
Margaret M. Nielsen, 89, of Low Moor, passed away, Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Alverno.
Funeral Services will be 11:00am, Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30am to the service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Margaret Mary Smith was born on November 1, 1932 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Marvin and Irene (Scanlon) Smith. She attended school in Elvira, graduating in 1950. She married Marvin H. “Mike” Nielsen on August 27, 1951 in the Elvira Lutheran parsonage, officiated by Rev. Kenneth Frazen; he passed away on March 16, 1987. She had two beautiful children, a son Mitchell Dean born in 1953, and daughter Mary Doris born in 1956.
She worked at Montgomery Ward, Tomco (now Remmington) Seed Corn Company, Low Moor Feed Service, clerk at the Low Moor Post Office, auto license department for Clinton County Treasurer, and kitchen help at Central Community School in DeWitt. On May 10, 1975 she served as officer-in-charge at the Low Moor Post Office and was appointed Postmaster on July 5, 1975 taking oath in Springfield, Illinois from District Manager, Mr. Carl J.L. Wessel. She served as officer-in-charge in Albany, Il post office from November 1985 to January 1986. She retired from Low Moor Post Office on October 2, 1992. She also worked at the Low Moor Café, Eagles Bakery, Econo Foods Bakery, and the elections for the Clinton County Auditor.
After retiring she volunteered for Samaritan Auxiliary, Low Moor Field Days, she served Low Moor Lions breakfast at Low Moor Methodist Church and helped with bingo at the Low Moor Community Center. On June 22, 2001, she received the “Award of Excellence” from Area Agency on Aging Older Worker Program. She was a member of the Clinton Women of the Moose Chapter #474 since 1952, and a former member of DeWitt #238 American Legion. She was a member of the Low Moor United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer, Sunday School teacher, membership secretary, and historian. She was a den mother for cub scouts. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, baking, mowing grass, and decorating cakes.
She is survived by her daughter: Mary (Wayne) Boney of Low Moor and her granddog: Piper. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Mitchell, and two brothers.
