Joan B. Burkert's Obituary
Joan Benson Burkert, 87, of West Branch, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Crestview Specialty Care in West Branch. Services for Joan will be held Monday, April 8, 2019 at 11:00AM at the Elvira Zion Lutheran Church, Elvira, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until the service hour Monday at the Church. Burial will be held Tuesday at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made by visiting snellzornig.com.
Joan Benson was born July 17, 1931 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of August and Vernetta (Naeve) Benson. Joan received her teaching degree from Mount St. Clare College and taught in the Calamus and Elvira Schools. She was also an aide at the Fowler Bruce School in Clinton. She married Merlin V. Burkert on August 2, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton; he died January 6, 1983.
She had been an active member of Elvira Zion Lutheran Church for Many years.
Survivors include her son, Mark P. Burkert of Iowa City, IA; daughter, Mary E. Burkert of St. Paul, MN; sister, Shirley Howe of Elvira, Iowa and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Arlene Thompson.
Memorials may be made to the family for a charity of their choice.
