Jeanette (Jantje) was born October 4, 1934 in Haula, Netherlands, the daughter of James and Jennie (Veldkamp) Vander Gaast. The family moved to the U.S. in October of 1947, when Jeanette was age 13. She was a 1954 graduate of Okoboji Consolidated Schools. She married Ronald Arms January 30, 1955 in Lake Park, IA; he died May 23, 2003.
Jeanette was a homemaker. She was also an animal lover and often adopted animals in need of a home. She enjoyed bird watching and gardening. She was a traveler with her husband and spent winters in Corpus Christi and Big National Park in their RV, always looking for out of the way places to see. She enjoyed spending her summers on the farm in northwestern Iowa, after Ron’s retirement. In high school, Jeanette learned a new culture, a new language, and how to play the game of basketball. She was always up for trying something new and was full of laughter.
