James Holdgrafer's Obituary
James Holdgrafer, beloved husband, devoted dad, and proud “Papa,” passed away far too soon, leaving behind a family who will forever carry his love and lessons with them.
James Joseph Holdgrafer was born on March 25, 1970 in Clinton, the son of Ronald and Elaine (Burken) Holdgrafer. He was a 1988 graduate of East Central High School and later from Indian Hills Community College. He served in the Iowa National Guard from 1987-1995. He married Melissa Wilke on February 19, 2000 in Clinton.
James lived a life rooted in the simple things that mattered most—family, hard work, and time spent outdoors. Whether he was riding his bike, tending to the land and animals he loved through farming, or listening to George Strait with a smile on his face, James found joy in life’s everyday moments.
Family was the center of his world. As a husband, he was loyal, steady, and supportive. As a dad, he led with quiet strength, guidance, and deep pride. But some of his greatest joy came from being “Papa.” He rarely missed an opportunity to be in the stands or on the sidelines, faithfully attending his grandchildren’s games, concerts, and events. No matter how busy life was, he made sure they knew he was there cheering them on.
James believed in showing up for the people he loved. He worked hard on the farm and as an electrician at Clysar in Clinton for over 30 years. He cared deeply, and never needed much more than good company, open roads, and a good country song to feel content.
He is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Holdgrafer; and his three daughters and their spouses, Danielle and Dan Wilkins, Allison and Michael Voss, and Molly and Kory Horan. He was a proud and devoted Papa to his grandchildren, Kase, Claire, and Colt Wilkins; Grayson, Leo, Rory, and Collins Voss; and Adaline Horan, with another Horan grandbaby on the way to be named James. Also survived by his parents Ron and Elaine Holdgrafer, brother and sister-in-law Eric (Lisa) Holdgrafer, brother-in-law Jesse Budde (Megan), and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Theresa, his brother-in-law Steve Davis, his grandparents, and his mother-in-law.
A Funeral Mass will be 11:00am, Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at St. Joseph Catholic Church – Preston. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Iowa National Guard and the Preston American Legion. Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Reuter, Kevin Bormann, Brad Knutsen, Byron Bielenberg, Troy Knutsen, and Jacob Wilke. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4:00-7:00pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and from 10:00am to the mass time Wednesday at the church. James would want you to be comfortable so please dress casual and come as you are.
Though his time with us was far too short, the legacy he leaves behind is lasting: a family who loved him deeply, countless memories made in ordinary moments, and a reminder to live with humility, loyalty, and heart.
He will be missed beyond words and remembered always.
The family extends their gratitude and appreciation to the Preston, Goose Lake, and Charlotte fire departments and the Clinton County Sheriffs Office for their compassion and care.
