James A. Carstensen's Obituary
James (Jim) Allen Carstensen, 87, a lifelong resident of Clinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, in Iowa City, Iowa.
Jim was born on December 14, 1938, to Detlef and Olivia (Nelson) Carstensen. The last surviving of their five children, he was raised with a strong sense of responsibility, integrity, and devotion to family—values that guided him throughout his life.
On October 8, 1960, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Annette (Colburn) Carstensen. Together they built a life rooted in love for their family, stewardship of the family business, and service to their community. Annette was taken far too soon in 1994 following a courageous battle with breast cancer, but her spirit remained an enduring presence in Jim’s life and in the lives of those who loved her.
Family was at the center of Jim’s world, and he spoke often and proudly of his children and grandchildren, finding his greatest joy in their accomplishments and everyday moments. Known to his grandchildren as “Papa Jim,” he took special pride in keeping a home that was always warm—welcoming in every sense of the word—and it became the family’s favorite landing spot, especially for holidays and time together. He is survived by his children Brent (Ann) of Iowa City, IA., Lynne (Stuart) Gunn of Marietta, SC., James (Zach) of Waukee, IA., and Lisa (Michael) O’Rourke of Kenilworth, IL.; his grandchildren Olivia, Nathan, and Valerie Gunn, and Madeline, Ryan, Sean, and Grace O’Rourke; and his “adopted” Australian exchange student son, Ian (Virginia) Edwards of Sydney, AUS., who became a cherished member of the family.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife Annette, his parents, his twin sister Judith (Jack) Gorman, and his brothers David (Joanne), Richard, and Jack (Patricia).
Later in life, Jim had the good fortune of reconnecting with a high school classmate, Kay Mulholland, who became a loving companion, trusted confidant, and steady anchor for more than 30 years. Jim deeply valued the joy of a “bonus family” through Kay’s children and grandchildren.
Professionally, Jim dedicated more than 40 years to Carstensen Freight Lines, the family company founded by his father, Detlef, in 1936. After Detlef’s passing in 1945, Jim’s mother, Olivia, led the company with remarkable strength as President and Treasurer. Jim later served as Secretary‑Treasurer, supporting the company’s continued success with steady diligence through many late nights and weekends.
After his years with Carstensen Freight Lines, Jim served as office manager for Clinton Electrical & Mechanical and later as comptroller for Sullivan’s Foods in Savannah, Illinois, before retiring.
Jim was deeply committed to his community and served in numerous leadership roles, including:
• Clinton Kiwanis Club (Vice President and President)
• Clinton Municipal Transit Authority (first Chairman of the newly formed authority)
• United Fund Board of Directors
• Clinton Jaycees Board of Directors
• Clinton Country Club (Treasurer and Board Member)
• President, Clinton Chapter of the American Field Service
• St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Secretary, Treasurer, and Board Member)
Jim was a quiet, steady man whose influence was felt far beyond his words. He lived not for recognition but with an unwavering commitment to his values, his work, and—above all—his family. Through example rather than instruction, he taught the importance of integrity, perseverance, and doing what is right simply because it is right.
He was also known for his gentle wit and warm smile. Even in serious moments, Jim had a way of lightening the mood and putting others at ease, making them feel comfortable, welcome, and at home.
As Jim would have appreciated, those he left behind are reminded that life is much better lived with a good sense of humor.
The family deeply appreciates the kind, considerate, and compassionate care dad received from Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, the Solon Retirement Village Skilled Therapy Center, and The Bird House Hospice Home in Iowa City.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Snell-Zornig Funeral Home in Clinton. Funeral services will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clinton. A private interment ceremony will follow at Springdale Cemetery in Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed, in Jim’s memory, to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clinton or The Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County, in Iowa City.
