Looking for a lost Navy ship that we were supposed to report to.
Our special talks we had during war time.
Jack was a great guy and GREAT SAILOR. I'm so sad as I just came across his obituary. I was in the Navy for some time with Jack. Have some very
special memories that we shared. I remember riding with Jack and Darlene in their Red Mustang!

Jack Merten is one of my closest and best friends since we met as young kids in our neighborhood in Garner, Hancock County, Iowa. He was like a brother as we grew up together and prowled the rural countryside fishing, hunting, looking for arrowheads and enjoying nature. We kept in touch over the years despite the miles of separation between us as we moved on in life. Jack accomplished so much in his life - a life well lived with his family. We were lucky enough to get to see each other last August along with other neighborhood friends, eat ice cream and reminisce about our youthful days growing up in the 50s and 60s - all good memories for the most part. Jack is one of those unforgettable people that will live in my heart forever. Our memories will never die. RIP Jack.
I always felt that Jack was a very successful and accomplished individual. Jack graduated from Garner-Hayfield Highschool (I'm sure at a much higher ranking than myself), he went on to serve his country, returned to get an advanced teaching degree and then shared his knowledge and life experience with our youth of today. I really consider that a wonderful accomplishment and life experience but not real surprising from the Jack that I knew. I personally will always remember him and his great personality, we will be thinking of you Jack. Dana G., David H. and Larry H.
I considered Jack a good friend. We lived together with some other guys in Mason City after High School and stayed friends throughout our adult lives. I came back to Iowa for my Father-in-law's memorial and Jack took my son and I fishing by Lansing. We had a great time! We stopped at a sausage place that actually made them and ended up eating brats for days! What a memory!
I was lucky enough to be in Jack’s class at Garner-Hayfield . I am so sorry for your loss. My sympathy and God’s blessing to your family!
Margaret and I express our deepest sympathy to your family on the loss of Jack. I was so glad that he was able to make some of our class reunions but I knew that he was dealing with health issues but fought a long and courageous battle. Please know you will be in our thoughts and prayers in the coming days and may you treasure the many memories he has left you with! God's Love & Peace, Warren & Margaret Torkelson
