Evelyn Tyler McKenrick's Obituary
Evelyn Tyler McKenrick, 93, of the Alverno and Camanche, Iowa, passed away, Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Alverno. Services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at St. Marks United Methodist Church, Camanche. Private visitation will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Camanche Chapel, Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Evelyn’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Evelyn Catheal Tyler was born November 14, 1921 in Camanche, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Laura (Howes) Tyler. She was a 1939 Clinton High School graduate. She married Samuel McKenrick on October 20, 1945 at the Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago.
She was a U.S. Navy (Wave) WWII veteran.
Evelyn was well-known by residents of Camanche, in part due to her employment as a postal clerk at the Camanche Post Office. She retired from the post office in 1982, after 20 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Camanche. Evelyn was also a member of Valley Oaks Golf Club, where she enjoyed golfing with her husband, friends and her children. She also enjoyed playing bridge with friends and belonged to two bridge clubs. Evelyn’s hobbies included basket weaving, sewing and needlework, gardening, cooking and baking. Her donated pies were often the hit at local raffles.
She is survived by her husband, Sam, at the Alverno; son, Thomas (Brenda) McKenrick of Cameron, NC; daughters, Jane McKenrick of West Des Moines, IA and Linda (Ken Zarling) Menke of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren, Nancy VanDyk, Brian (Alanna) Menke, Melissa Belling and Kevin Herrity; great-grandchildren, Vladimir VanDyk, Skylar Menke, Gracie Menke; Vincent VanDyk, Kaden Menke and Zoe Belling; and beloved sister-in-law, Mary Tyler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, a son-in-law, a granddaughter, two nephews and a niece.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s or to the family for a charity of their choice.
