Dorothy M. Raab's Obituary
Dorothy M. Raab, 95, of Iowa City, IA, formerly of Clinton, died Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace Church in Clinton, with Father Kenneth Kuntz officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 10 to 11 am at the Church. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Dorothy Marie (Saville) Raab was born on May 27, 1923 in Plankinton, South Dakota to William H. and Mary (Nalley) Saville. She grew up on the family farm near Maquoketa, IA. Dorothy graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1940. She married Ernest Karl Raab on October 21, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton. They were married for 62 years until his death in 2013.
She worked for Bickelhaupt Motors as a bookkeeper until the birth of their first child. After her children were in school, Dorothy started to work in the accounting services of Dee Gosling & Co (later Clifton Gunderson and Co.). After her three children were grown, she began working full time for the company. She worked for 26 years, retiring in 1989.
After her retirement, Dorothy fulfilled a life long dream of completing college. She began studies at Mt. St. Clare College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree on Mother’s Day weekend, 1993, just before her 70th birthday.
Dorothy was a member of the Rags to Riches Investment Club and past treasurer of the Clinton Art Association. She & Ernest were active volunteers at Mt. St. Clare College and helped deliver Meals on Wheels.
Dorothy and Ernest moved to Iowa City in 2006. They remained active including helping with the Free Lunch Program of First United Methodist Church of Iowa City.
Dorothy also enjoyed knitting, reading and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a loving mother & grandmother and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by two sons: John (Peg) Raab of Iowa City, Michael (Sheri) Raab of Boone, Iowa and a son-in-law, Dr. David Downing of Lake Orion, MI; four grandchildren; Adam (Jolene) Raab of Iowa City, Julie (Bryan) Artman of Spring, Texas, Rebecca (Mikko Wolf) Raab, and Kevin (Kathleen Montes) Raab of Crossroads, Texas, and five great-children, Olivia and Bryan Michael of Spring, TX, Gwendolyn and Calvin of Iowa City and Paavo Wolf.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, a brother, and her daughter, Jane.
