Our sweet mother, Doris Marie Merkel was born May 5, 1926 in Ventura, Iowa, the daughter of Benhart and Ethel (Ferguson) Merkel. She married our dad, Carl Hellweg on December 16, 1945 in Camanche; he died February 1, 1999.
Mom was a homemaker, a meticulous seamstress (sewing everything from parade costumes to wedding dresses), and a devoted farm wife, but her greatest passion was raising and loving her seven daughters and their families. She was a spiritual woman and a life-long member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. She was a 50+ year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Mom is survived by her daughters: Linda (Gerry) Kreuder of Hampton, Illinois, Ginger Noble of Omaha, Nebraska, Carla (Doug) Dudley of Omaha, Nebraska, Doris “Dorie” (Clif) Stoller of Thomson, Illinois, Rita (Randy) Hill of Rogers, Arkansas, Tina (Michael) Moes of Dubuque, Iowa, and Terri (Steve) Smithson of Miles, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren with another on the way, and one great-great granddaughter; two sisters-in-law: Pat Merkel of LeClaire, Iowa, and Janet Merkel of Bettendorf, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Donald and Leon; son-in-law, David Noble; and great-grandson, Luke Allen Fedlam, Jr.
Memorials can be made to the family.
