Miss McCutcheon, as we knew her then, was my 5th-grade teacher in 1956-57. I remember her quite well as one of my special teachers I had at Longfellow School for grades 4, 5, & 6. One distinctive thing about Miss McCutcheon, which I still carry with me to this day was the way she printed on the blackboard. Her style caught my eye and to this day I still print my capital "E" with three horizontal strokes with no vertical downstroke. (There is also the time when I brought an extremely large Nazi flag into her room before class and draped it over the desks. I'll not forget her reaction!) She is one of those special teachers that one remembers throughout life.
I had heard she married Mr. Sherwood, who I also had as an art teacher in 7th grade (1957-58, if my memory serves me). Mr Sherwood also was an influence in my art life. I went on to become a graphics designer after getting my BFA in art education and worked for the Des Moines Tribune & Register and The Kansas City Star. I share the sadness and extend my sympathy, but remember with pleasure the encounters I had with Miss McCutcheon and Mr. Sherwood.
