uncle don came into our lives he had found us he was a step brother to my mother inlaw .I got to know him with a quick joke and a smile that he always had he always had good stories to tell about his kids. and what he did as a young man i would call him and go over to his house about one of the first winters he was here in iowa we sat in his front living room and watch the snow fall while my youngest son josh went sledding down the hill we laughed a lot about being young and watch the snow he was a great person and im glad i shared the time with him and got to know him he will be missed

Don was a very outstanding person, very caring sensitive, he did our class book so we have something very special to remember him for!! My heart goes out to his whole family.

I feel so blessed to have met both Don and Mary Ann this past year. After my own father's death in 2001, Don sent me his "Memoir" of their youth in Clinton. So Don was largely responsible for having enabled me to know my father and his roots much better than I was able during Dad's lifetime. I am eternally grateful to him for that wonderful gift.

I was saddened to hear of the poor turn in his health in recent months. And while he will be greatly missed by all-he certainly touched the lives of many with his humor and his grace-we can rejoice in the knowledge that he's moved on to the Better Life. I imagine there's quite a stir in Heaven now that Donnie Smith and Jim Evans are hanging out once again.

Clinton has lost one of its greatest citizens!

Don was a wonderfully kind and friendly man. When his health was better, he was a great fan at my girls basketball & softball games. We so appreciated his support. The cards he made were better looking than any Hallmark made....and the words were straight from his heart. My kids loved his dog, Berky. Don was a great man to have as a neighbor...always quick with a smile and great conversation. Our lives were enriched for having known him.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Don's passing. He was a classmate, friend and very good person. We visited Don and Mary Ann in December to congratulate him on his excellent job in preparing the reunion book for our class. Don can be proud of the life he led with dignity, contribution and a quick smile. It is a sad day for sure.
