Donald Delbert Obermiller was born July 19, 1942 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Delbert and Betty Jane (Platt) Obermiller. He was a 1960 graduate of Clinton High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1964. In 1964 he married Shizuko Tobaru in Okinawa, Japan. Donald proudly worked as a firefighter for the City of Clinton for 32 years and retired as the Department’s first Training Officer.
A dreamer and a man of action, Don lived life to its fullest as he pursued a myriad of hobbies and interests throughout his entire life. He loved the outdoors going back to his childhood as he fished and hunted along the Mississippi River while growing up in Camanche. He loved swimming, daily sunrise walks to Eagle Point, biking to Thompson Nature Center, kayaking, canoeing, prairie preservation, and any other activity that got him outside.
Deeply devoted to his family, Don enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards, dominoes and chess. As a loving grandfather, he spent countless and patient hours playing and spending time with his five grandchildren. He was immensely proud of his family.
Quick to laugh and quick to tease, Don’s brilliant blue eyes were well known. Outgoing and friendly, he made friends everywhere he went, as he showed genuine interest and compassionate consideration toward others. He will be missed deeply.
Don is survived by his wife Shizuko of Clinton, three children: David Obermiller of St. Peter, Minnesota, Cindy (Mike Yackshaw) Obermiller of Clinton, and Lisa (Dan Blaszinski) of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren: Daniel (Carol), Ry, Ben, Lilly and Delaney; siblings: Randa McAlpine of Camanche, Bonnie Flynn of Ingleside, Texas and Julie (Jeff) Harmon of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law: Bruce McAlpine and Jim Flynn and his dog Barney. The family truly appreciates the care Don received from the compassionate staff at Eagle Point Nursing Home.
Memorials may be made to the family.
