Darrell and I worked together in many facets. First I had the chance to enjoy time with him at the LumberKings games. He ran the scoreboard along a much younger version of myself. He always had the positive view. Many times he would tell me "we're going to come back and win." That was followed by "it will be the greatest comeback since Lazerus." He also love our arrivedechie sound clip.
I also worked with Darrell in his community service time. Mr. Smith was always willing to speak to me, the annoying radio reporter, and help me understand issues. Little did I know all that government exposure would lead to another career for me.
Now as CCASWA Director, Darrell always talked positively about how our agency is vital to the city and county. He always cautioned the City against any hasty moves in solid waste. He told new council members about how important CCASWA is.
He and his bride always welcomed me when I would occasionally drop in at the Children's Discovery Center.
There are not many who so selflessly gave of themselves for the better good of so many. Darrell Smith was one of those. His reach and influence on our area and our citizens will resonate for years to come. I hope some day Mr. Smith will get the true recognition he deserves.
Thanks Darrell and R.I.P.
