While in Colorado, Cyndi met and married Rick Winter. Together, they had two children, Jake (Emily) Winter and Jordan (Tanner) Voss.
Cyndi began working as a Speech Language Pathologist for the Fort Collins, Colorado School District in 1988. She later earned her Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 1989. She took part in statewide training for Augmentative and Assistive Devices. She worked in the Public Schools in Colorado for 4 years before moving to Clinton, IA.
Rick and Cyndi moved their family to Clinton, IA, in January 1992, where Cyndi worked at Mt. St. Clare Speech and Hearing Center for 20 years. In 1994, she founded and became the coordinator of the Kehl Communication Closet (KCC), which loaned assistive devices to those in need and provided evaluations, therapy, consultations, and in-services on these devices. Cyndi became Assistant Director of Mt. St. Clare Speech and Hearing Center in June 2003. Following the closure of Mt. St. Clare Speech Center, she was an independent contractor for Providence Therapy Services until her retirement in December 2016.
Cyndi was an advocate for her community, where she possessed a passion for working with people with communication disorders, was a successful grant writer, and was an avid fundraiser. She helped the speech center host a Dance-A-Thon through Ashford University and wrote numerous United Way grants. She was responsible for bringing the Symphony of Lights to Clinton; she also assisted with the Sunset Socials and Blue and Gold Raffles for Prince of Peace Parish.
Cyndi enjoyed traveling, especially with her siblings and friends. She was a great vacation planner, handling all the details and making each trip special and memorable. One of her favorite trips was to the French Polynesian Islands. In addition, she loved snow skiing, boating on the Mississippi River, tailgating at Iowa football games, going to the beach, spending time in Florida and, most recently, spending time with her grandkids. She was a very loyal friend to many.
Survivors include her husband, Rick, of 36 years; her two children, Jake (Emily) Winter and Jordan (Tanner) Voss; her three grandchildren, Jones Winter, Gavin, and Madalynn Voss. Also surviving is her mother, Ruth Ann Kehl of Dubuque; three brothers, Robert (Bobby) and Tina Kehl of Albany, IL; Daniel (Leslie) Kehl of Solon, IA; Kevin (Barb) Kehl of Dubuque, IA; and one sister, Tina (P.J.) Anglin of Hazel Green, WI, and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Cyndi was preceded in death by her father, Robert Kehl of Dubuque, IA, and her in-laws, Harold and Darlene Winter, of Greeley, CO. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
Cyndi fought her cancer battle with courage, grace and dignity, drawing strength from her great faith. She had a great attitude and never complained. Some of her favorite sayings included "Give it to God," and "One Day at a Time". Cyndi’s passing has left an unfillable void in the hearts of her loved ones, both family and friends.
We appreciate all of our family and friends who were there with us along this journey as a supporter once told her, “In the end, we are all just walking each other Home”.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to go to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
