Betty June Weinbeck Chekal's Obituary
Betty June Weinbeck Chekal, 94, of Clinton passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021 at her home in Park Vista Assisted Living – Camanche.
Funeral Services are being held privately on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clinton. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Bengtson, Gordy Bell, Gary Verdon, Randy Meier, Brad Prucha and Alex Chekal. Betty June Weinbeck was born June 3, 1926 at home in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Claus and Johannah (Jurgensen) Weinbeck. She was a 1944 graduate of Clinton High School. Her father passed away when she was a girl and she together with her five sisters banned together to help their mother make ends meet. She started working very early in life and took great pride in her accomplishments. She worked for the Curtis Company, Kline’s Department Store and also for the Department of Human Services in Clinton. She married her husband Allen Chekal on August 9, 1946; he preceded her in death on January 9, 2013. Once married she used that same pride and work ethic to raise her six children and after her children were raised she went back to work for over 20 years as a legal secretary for then Shaff and Farwell later know as Farwell and Bruhn until she retired in the early 1990’s.
Betty was active in many activities in school and excelled in music; she earned a music scholarship to Wartburg College, played the piano and sang in many weddings and funerals over the years. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clinton where she was baptized and confirmed. She was a gifted seamstress and made many quilts, she enjoyed cooking for her family especially at the holidays, she was an avid reader who was intelligent, detail oriented and one to come to with questions about many things. Betty’s greatest legacy that she leaves behind is in her family; she was completely and utterly devoted to her husband, children and her grandchildren.
She is survived by her four daughters: Barbara (Gary) Bengtson of Naperville, Illinois, Alison (Gordy) Bell of West Des Moines, Iowa, Marcia (Gary Verdon) Chekal of Hinsdale, Illinois, and Christine (Randy) Meier of Clinton; two sons: John (Eileen) Chekal of Omaha, Nebraska, and Michael (Renee) Chekal of Glenwoods, Iowa; 13 grandchildren: Matthew, Angie, Christin, Missy, Hannah, Madeline, Ellen, Katie, Jessica, Jacob, Laura, Christopher and Alex; eight great grandchildren: Alison, Sarah, Lauren, Connor, Meghan, Cecilia, Lucy and Betsy and one more on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allen of 66 years, and five sisters: Muriel Peterson, Mardelle Ray, Valora Gehrls, Eleanor Psota and Joan Andrews.
Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clinton or to the Salvation Army. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Park Vista – Camanche for the loving care they provided to their mother.
