Bernard B. Lehman's Obituary
Bernard (Bernie) Lehman, 103, of Clinton, passed away at MercyOne on Monday morning. Bernie was partners with his brothers Edward and Milton in Lehman & Co. Auto and Truck Parts in Clinton.
Bernie was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Julius Lehman and Sarah (Levy) Lehman. A member of a large Jewish population in Sioux City, he and his siblings graduated high school there. Bernie served his country during WW II, first in the Signal Corps (US Army). Following their honorable discharges, the three Lehman brothers searched the Midwest for an auto parts store to purchase and operate. They purchased a store in Clinton and renamed it and grew the business. The store remained under their ownership until 1979. A highlight of his time in Clinton was Bernie’s meeting and, in 1952, marrying Anna (Ann) Ruth Bruggemann. A talented woman of many skills, Ann was worshiped by Bernie. They frequently traveled to locations in the Caribbean and Pacific islands. One particular interest of Ann was supporting Laotian immigrants living in Clinton, immigrants who had escaped the suffering, poverty, and loss of personal freedom in Communist Laos: she helped find employment for them and even hosted weddings for the hard-working immigrants. One of the Laotians, Sak (Jeff) Tomona, remained in Clinton (with his wife and children) and acted as a friend and helper to Bernie as Bernie aged.
Bernie was a member of a citywide championship baseball team when he lived in Sioux City. When he moved to Clinton, Bernie became one of the Clinton Country Club dew sweepers, so named because they played golf early in the morning and quickly.
A naturally friendly and calm individual, Bernie remained mentally sharp and socially active even as his physical skills began to wane. Several times a week, he met with a special group of friends at breakfast coffee klatches.
Bernie started a college scholarship program from which many local students have benefited. The scholarships are presented annually in memory of his wife Ann.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents, his wife, his brothers Edward and Milton, and his sister Goldye Lieberman. He is survived by three nephews (and their spouses and children): Jeffrey Lehman, formerly of Clinton and now of Newton, MA; David Lieberman, formerly of Sioux City and now of Evergreen, CO; and Joseph (Joey) Katich, formerly of Davenport and now of Salem, OR.
Donations can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
At his wishes, his remains were cremated. The Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. To all who knew Bernie, the common Jewish message of condolence and sympathy is offered: May his memory be a blessing.
