Barb was the first person I met at Luther College our Freshman year. We were 18 then. I can still hear Barb giggle as we shared dorm life, parties, and the Whippie Dip. Our friendship continued for 50 years. One of our highlights as Sophomores was spending the month of January at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. We traveled by Greyhound bus in the dead of winter across the frozen plains to get to Tacoma. That was an adventure!
After I left Iowa for the West, I continued to come back every couple of years or so to visit family. Barb always took the time to meet me in Waterloo or Cedar Rapids for lunch and we would catch up on family life. She kept up the art of letter writing and never forgot my birthday.
My daughter, Dana, received her Occupational Therapy education in Iowa several years ago. When she was assigned her field experience in Clinton, Barb was was right there to help her find a place to live for the summer. I knew I could count on Barb for help.
Throughout her illnesses, I never heard Barb make the smallest complaint, even though she suffered so much pain and had such a drastic change of lifestyle. To me she was a model of how to face adversity with grace.
It has been a blessing to know Barb. She has been a true and faithful friend!
My condolences to Becky, Miles, and all of Barb's siblings!
