Arlene Carol Rickert Lahann was born on September 9, 1923 to Elmer August and Leona Clausen Rickert in rural Bellevue, IA. She was baptized in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston, IA and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Read Obituary
Mrs. Lahann was the teacher who pushed me to become a better student. She made her expectations very clear. She is one of the two educators at Whittier who influenced me to be an educator. Fond memories in her classroom at Whittier. Prayers and sympathy to the family members.

As an adult, when someone asks me to name my favorite teacher, it is Mrs. Lahann by far. She was my 5th grade teacher at Baldwin. In fact, I have a letter (framed and on a memorabilia wall in our home) that she wrote to my parents when I was no longer at Baldwin, but had moved on to Lyons Junior High. Apparently I was disappointed to not make chorus and hearing that led to her taking action. The letter contained detailed positives when it came to my music abilities, encouraging and predicting that someday I would make a "lovely, capable elementary music teacher". As we sorted through family artifacts, I found and read that letter for the first time. It reconfirmed my admiration and love of her as a teacher and compassionate person who takes action. No doubt she was consistent in her passionate care with her family and is dearly missed. My deepest sympathies.
(Oh, and yes, I did become an elementary music teacher in the North Scott Schools for 25 years.)
Linda Jorgensen
She was my 5th &6th grade teacher and turned me into a good student. She had me stand up in recognition for a Math test that I did well on when I had never been particularly good at anything in school. I've always attributed much of the success that I've had to her giving me some confidence. I'm still doing Math in my job at Mayo Clinic and think of her sometimes.
I remember Arlene and her family when she lived just up the road from my parents farm SE of Charlotte. She had a party for Joy and we all wore headbands with rabbit ears. She will be remembered by me as a kind, fun, and loving person.
I had her for a teacher at Whittier School. She was a great teacher.
