Alberta A. Mommsen's Obituary
Alberta A. Mommsen, 101, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024 at MercyOne, Clinton. Services will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:00AM until the service hour Wednesday at the Church. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig is assisting the family with arrangements. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Quentynn MacPhee and Kellen Seifert and Norlin Mommsen, Rick Kuehl, Stephen Thayer, Brian “Pete” Hagglund and Andrew Hagglund. Honorary pallbearers will be David Rogis, Mike and Chris Sullivan and members of the Clinton Police and Fire Departments. Online condolences may be expressed at snellzornig.com.
Alberta was born October 27, 1922 in Bellevue, Iowa, the daughter of John J. and Louise (Milder) Schroeder. She was educated in the Preston Schools. Alberta married John Mommsen, Jr. February 26, 1944 in Preston, Iowa; John died February 12, 1999.
Alberta was a homemaker and farmed with her husband most of her life. She loved babysitting her grandchildren and playing cards and she was the best cook and baker. She taught Sunday school at St. John’s for more than 20 years and was a member of the Women of the Moose.
Survivors include her daughter, Brenda MacPhee of Clinton, IA; granddaughter, Michelle Seifert of Priceville, AL; great-grandchildren: Quentynn MacPhee, Kellen Seifert, Delaenie Seifert and Caelan Machande and sisters: Loretta Sullivan of Clinton, IA and Clara Hall of Arizona.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and six sisters.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the ER and second floor nursing staff at MercyOne, the Clinton Fire and Police Departments, especially Cpl. Shane Haskell and Sgt. John Melvin for treating her as their own grandmother; to Marcia Witt for helping with her care the past couple of months; to Marcia DeBoer for the check-ins and visits and for being a substitute granddaughter when she was missing Michelle and to Pastor Pete and Betty Hagglund for being there for Grandma and Grandpa the past 31 years.
