Lydia Weissenburger Halbach, 83, of Clinton, passed away, Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the Alverno. In accordance with Lydia’s wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Anatomical Gift Department. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3:00 pm on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. A visitation will precede the service at 2:00 pm at the church. There will be a celebration of life that evening at Clinton Lumber Kings' Riverview Stadium, beginning at 5:00 pm. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes is assisting the family. Lydia was born on September 13, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri the daughter of George LaMonte and Helen (Haubert) Weissenburger. She graduated from Keokuk High School, attended the University of Arizona, and earned her teaching degree from the University of Iowa. Lydia taught elementary school in the Clinton Community School District for 27 years, at Longfellow and Jefferson. Lydia’s vibrant spirit found a home on the Clinton Baseball Club Board of Directors for 62 years, becoming its first woman and longest-serving director. Another summer favorite was morning lap swim at the municipal pool. In the off season, Lydia’s interests extended to the Whittier and Longfellow PTA boards, Clinton County Retired Personnel Association, Alpha Delphian Literary Society, Wisdom Circle, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Team, Women in Theology, Clinton Women’s Club, Clinton Ecumenical Housing Board, and Associate Benevolent Society. She loved reading and participated in two book clubs. She belonged to Prince of Peace Parish, serving on the May/November funeral luncheon team. One of the founding members, Lydia recently celebrated 35 years with the Clinton Sisters of St. Francis Associates. Lydia was preceded in death by her parents; her brother,Ted; brothers-in-law Joe Halbach, Ed Halbach, and Dick Kissack; and sister-in-law, Lou Halbach. Lydia is survived by her daughters Anne (William) Gorden of Midland,Texas and Kate (Darcy Brazen) Halbach of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a granddaughter, Katie Gorden; sisters-in-law Connie Weissenburger, Jan Halbach, and Connie Kissack of Clinton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Sisters of St. Francis, Friends of Riverview Stadium, Alzheimer’s Association, and Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
