Leo J. Cozzolino 99, of Clinton, died on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the Alverno. Graveside Services will be 1:00pm, Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at the Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:30-12:30pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory. Leo was born on July 17, 1922 to Joseph and Caroline (Pasqualoni) Cozzolino. After graduating from Clinton High School in 1941, Leo worked for Clinton Corn Processing and joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was with the 345th Bomb Group of the 5th Air Force in the South Pacific theater of operations during World War II. He flew 31 combat missions as the pilot of a B-25 medium bomber configured for strafing and bombing. He was discharged in 1946. Leo held an airline transport pilot certificate and instructed for all certificates and all ratings for piston engine single and multi engine land planes. In 1971 Leo was the recipient of the Annual Flight Instructor of the Year award presented by the Aerospace Education Council of lowa. In 1950, Leo went into business with his brother S.V. (Duke) Cozzolino. They owned and operated a restaurant and tavern business in Savanna, Illinois. In 1959 they built the Savanna Speed Wash coin laundry and later the Palisades Bowling Lanes. Leo solely owned and managed three apartment buildings in Clinton. Leo was an avid golfer and he and his wife MaryLou spent winters at their Lehigh, Florida home from 1984-2005. They then returned to Clinton on a permanent basis. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clinton Leo is survived by his step-son Joseph (Linda) Bohr of Cedar Falls, his step-daughter Sandra (Dan) Herr of Wilton, lowa, five step-grandchildren. Melanie (Robert) McDaniel, Mark(Trish) Bohr, Lynne (John ) Carroll, Becky (Randy)Woodring, and Carrie (Chad) Wunderlich, eleven step- great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews including a special nephew: Millard Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Dr. Sylvia Weigandt Cozzolino, his brothers S.V. Cozzolino and William Cozzolino, a sister Emily Smith, his wife MaryLou Bohr Cozzolino, and a great-grandson: Sean Carroll.
